How to Help a Homesick Kindergartner

Kids who are just starting kindergarten may feel homesick because they haven't adjusted to a new routine yet. However, you can take steps to relieve fears and make every child feel comfortable in a classroom setting. Ease the feelings that make children cling to the thought of being at home by engaging them in imaginative play, making friends and soaking up knowledge. Soon a homesick kindergartner will embrace the classroom environment, though some kids take longer to adapt than others.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to a homesick child and let her know that her mother is going to come back for her. This may help her feel more reassured that she will see her mom again. Tell her it's OK to feel homesick, but reassure her that she'll feel comfortable at school soon.

    • 2

Ask her mom to bring something from home to make her feel more relaxed at school. She might want her teddy bear, special snacks or a picture.

    • 3

Encourage the child to get involved in activities at school. Spend extra one-on-one time helping her with crafts or introducing her to new toys in the classroom.

    • 4

Introduce her to kids in the class who have similar interests and personality traits. Sometimes clinging to a buddy can help a child cope. In time, she may begin to make more friends and welcome the idea of going to school.

    • 5

Ask one of the parents to volunteer to help in the classroom so the child can see how comfortable mom is in the new environment. Kids model behavior after their parents, and they might start to feel more content if they see that their parents like spending time in the classroom.
