Present the assignment, project or task and your expectations for completion. Explain how the assignment or task fits into the big picture to increase motivation. Give a clear deadline and specify the consequences of failure to meet the deadline as well as any reward or privilege resulting from meeting the deadline.
Give clear, concise directions and make sure the student understands the directions. Ask questions to determine if he is confused. Clarify if needed and answer any questions that arise. If possible, give two or three clearly defined options for completing the assignment and allow the student to choose the one that will work best for him.
Check on his progress routinely and ensure that he is following directions. Offer encouraging words and assistance if needed. Remove anything causing distraction, such as cell phones, unrelated conversations, etc.
Conduct a follow-up meeting to determine what factors were influencing his work. Ask if the student felt equipped to complete the task or assignment and if he understood clearly what was expected of him and why. Praise him for his good work in successfully meeting the deadline if he met it. Ask him about his motivation or problems that hindered him from meeting the deadline if he was unsuccessful.
End the conversation by reminding the student why it is important to work efficiently and that the ultimate goal is learning, growth and preparation for life in a fast-paced world. Commit to work together to learn skills for greater efficiency.
