How to Grade for Classroom Participation

Class participation refers to how active a certain student may be in group discussions or in raising his hand to answer questions. Many schools today give a grade to reflect a pupil's participation, but it may be tricky to determine what grade to give a particular student in this subject. By creating categories and giving students marks for fulfilling these categories, you can keep an easy tally that will allow you to come up with a grade at the end of the term.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize classroom participation into categories that you want to grade by, like answering questions, reading aloud, asking questions or giving class presentations.

    • 2

Create a folder to keep participation marks. Have each student's name listed with boxes next to each name, with one box for each category of participation you want to grade.

    • 3

Make marks in the folder every time a student fulfills one of the categories, such as answering a question or participating in a class discussion.

    • 4

Determine what grade will be given for what marks. For example, three marks in each box may equal a B, while two marks in each box may equal a C.

    • 5

Encourage students to participate in class. Some children will be shyer than others and will need your encouragement to raise their marks.
