How to Do Annotated Textbooks in PowerPoint

Whether you teach elementary school or college, odds are that some of your students won't know how to annotate as they read. The biggest barrier to their understanding the concept is the fact that they don't know what kind of notes to write. One of the best ways to help them overcome that barrier is to show them how you annotate your books. You can do that by putting images of textbooks and other class materials that you have annotated in a PowerPoint presentation.

Instructions

    • 1

Scan a copy of your annotations and insert the picture of them as an image in PowerPoint. Lay your textbook face down on your scanner and push the lid down as far as it will go to eliminate as much light as possible. Push the scan button; the location of the button will differ for each scanner. When the image loads on the screen, verify that your notes are readable. Re-scan the image if it is too dark or fuzzy. Save the best scan as a .jpg file.

Create annotations using your word processor's comment feature and take screen shots to show them in your PowerPoint. Copy your chosen text into your word processor. Place your cursor next to the text about which you would like to comment. Find the comment feature under the "insert" or "review" tab in most processors. Type your annotation in the comment box. Use the "Prnt Scrn" or Apple Key, shift, and number three buttons on a Mac to take a screen shot. Save the screen shot as a .jpg file.

Take a picture of your annotations with your camera. Place your book in an area with plenty of light and use a camera with a high resolution optical zoom to take a picture of your annotations and the text on which they comment. A cell phone or tablet camera may also work when held close to the page. Upload the image to your computer. Save it as a .jpg

Edit and position the .jpg image of the notes and text in your PowerPoint program. Open the .jpg image with your photo editing or paint software. Zoom in or crop the image until your annotations and the text they comment on are easy to read and see. Save the .jpg image with a new file name, such as "annotated text and notes example." Open Power Point. Click on the "Insert" tab and select "Image" from the drop-down or horizontal menu. The location of your insert button and the menu that it brings up will depend on your version of PowerPoint. Browse the files and select the edited image. After the image is in your presentation, re-size and position it by dragging with your mouse.
