How to Decorate Potting Containers with Kids

Decorated potting containers make a perfect gift for Mother's Day or a grandparent's birthday. This practical gift becomes a keepsake when a child is the one decorating the pot. Potting containers come in many sizes and materials. For long-lasting and durable containers, using the traditional terra-cotta pot is recommended. Whether you're working with preschoolers or middle school students, the project is almost identical, with the only difference being the more advanced fine motor skills of the older children.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your work surface with a layer or two of newspaper. Give the children a smock or apron to protect their clothing.

    • 2

Pour multiple colors of tempera paints into small plastic cups. If you have a large number of children participating, provide multiple cups of each color.

    • 3

Put multiple foam paintbrushes next to each cup of paint. Small foam paintbrushes are easy for even young children to use.

    • 4

Place a potting container in front of each child. Smaller potting containers are ideal for young children.

    • 5

Explain to the children, before beginning the project, that the potting container can break if it is dropped.

    • 6

Write each child's name or initials on the bottom of the containers with a permanent marker.

    • 7

Allow the painted potting containers to dry on a counter for several hours after the children have finished painting their designs.
