Activities and Crafts Involving Curious George

Curious George is an impish monkey featured in a series of children’s books written by H.A. and Margret Rey. Though he was born in Africa, A Man in the Yellow Hat brings Curious George to America to live in a city where he has numerous adventures. You can create a variety of activities and crafts for kids to have fun with Curious George.
  1. Drawing

    • The Houghton Mifflin publishing website has a seven-step how to guide that kids can follow to draw Curious George. Kids simply scroll through the website and follow the directions that will teach them how to draw his eyes, face, nose, head, eyebrows and fur. The website also has a Complete Curious George Party Kit where the same step-by-step drawing diagram can be printed and colored.

    Dancing

    • PBS Kids has a website dedicated to Curious George. One activity that gets kids moving is Monkey Moves. All a kid has to do is click on one of the Curious George icons, watch it move and then mimic the movement and sound that he makes. One example of a move is for a kid to act like he is holding an ice cream up high, and say the words “Whoa.” In another move, kids flop down on their backs and put their arms and legs up in the air and shake them like a giddy monkey. There are eight moves in all. To make it more interesting, put the moves together in a choreographed sequence.

    Cooking

    • Monkeys like bananas and Curious George is no different. Turn cooking into an activity that relates to Curious George’s appetite. You can use your family's own banana bread recipe or find one online. It’s also possible to purchase cookie cutters shaped like Curious George’s head. Help kids learn about math as they add ingredients and then let them press the Curious George cookie cutter into the dough.

    Crafting

    • Kids can make their own Curious George with a toilet paper tube, construction paper, crayons or markers, glue and scissors. You can find a template of Curious George online or you can draw his body parts and hat. Let the kids color Curious George as they choose and then cut out the body parts and the hat. Wrap the tube in brown paper and attach. Then glue or tape on the arms, legs and head. Either attach the hat on Curious George’s head or in his hand.

    Learning

    • Since Curious George loves the color yellow, take a poster board and have the kids help you list all things that are yellow. After that, let them page through magazines and cut out corresponding yellow images and glue them to the poster board. Or, have them draw the items that they listed.
