Allow your learner to create a piece of art to dress up her room. To prepare for this project, gather several old magazines and newspapers. Give the crafter two sheets of foam board, one on which to display nouns and another on which to showcase verbs. Ask the learner to move through the magazines and newspapers and clip out nouns and verbs, creating piles of each. Instruct the learner to glue down these words, placing all the nouns on one sheet and all the verbs on another. Finish the creations by having the crafter draw pictures that correspond with the words on each paper. Punch holes in the upper corners of each sheet and string a ribbon through them, creating a loop by which to hang each creation.
Craft an original piece of children’s literature with your young learner. Begin by having the learner write out several sentences containing nouns and verbs. Help the crafter open a word processing document on the computer and type out these sentences, placing each at the bottom. Assist the crafter in changing the colors of the words that are nouns to red and the colors of the verbs to blue. Print the pages in color. Ask the crafter to cut up paper and use it to create pictures that represent the things discussed in the sentences. For example, she could cut out a paper cat and glue it down on the page that talked about the cat drinking milk. Conclude by binding the pages together with a binding machine.
Make a wearable craft item with your learner. Using a blank T-shirt and puffy paint, transform a standard T-shirt into an educational one. Stretch the T-shirt over a piece of corrugated cardboard to hold it flat. Have your crafter paint the word “noun” in the center of the shirt front and use paint to add words that fit into that category. Allow the front to dry, and repeat the process on the back, painting the word “verb” in the center and painting verbs all over the shirt back. Allow your crafter to proudly wear her creation.
Instruct your crafter in the lost art of embroidery by having her craft a noun and verb pillow. To begin this process, produce a pattern for embroidery letters. Give your crafter a piece of fabric stretched tight in an embroidery hoop, two colors of embroidery floss, a needle and the pattern. Ask her to stitch verbs onto the piece of fabric using one color and nouns using another. After she finishes her embroidery, cut another piece of fabric to the same size as the embroidered sheet and stitch them together, stuffing them to craft a parts of speech pillow with which the crafter can cuddle up at night.
