How to Convert a Verb to a Noun

English is one of the most difficult languages to master. Some words are pronounced the same but have different meanings, and others have the same spelling but are pronounced differently. Words may be nouns in one circumstance, but not in another. If you want to learn how to convert verbs into nouns, no problem. Change a verb just a little bit and voila, it may turn into a noun.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a suffix, such as -ade, -ance, -ant, -er, -ing, -ment, or -tion, to some verbs to covert them to nouns. The following nouns, for example, have verbs as their root words: blockade, appearance, defendant, greeter, runner, drawing, arrangement and creation.

    • 2

Put an adjective in front of some verbs to make them nouns. For example, add the adjective "long" before the verb "drive" and "drive" becomes a noun. Add "hard" before "work" and "work" is now a noun.

    • 3

Add an article, a possessive or a demonstrative adjective in front of some verbs to change them to nouns. For example, the second words in the following are nouns, not verbs: "the jump," "a swim," "his run," "that exercise" and "those hikes."

    • 4

Place the accent on some verbs on different syllables to make them into nouns. For example, place the accent on the first syllable rather than the second for the words conflict, desert, increase, permit and present to change them from verbs to nouns.
