Define the terminology to the children. Explain that a verb is an action word, a word that describes what the subject is, does or what happens to it.
Tell the children that there are different types of verbs. Describe action verbs as words that tell what the subject does. Give examples of action verbs, such as "jump," "run" or "talk." Describe linking verbs as verbs that connect the subject of the sentence to information about the subject. For instance, in the sentence, "The dog is brown" the linking verb is "is." Give several examples to the children.
Write complete sentences on paper or on the white board to show the verbs in context. To show mastery, ask the children to select the verb and choose which type of verb it is. Allow children to make up their own sentences with verbs.
