Print names of verbs on index cards. Set the cards in a face-down pile on a table, desk or other flat surface.
Invite one child to come up and take the first card on the pile.
Instruct the child to read the verb written on the card. Encourage her to act out the verb printed on the card. For example, if the word "run" is printed on the card, she may run in place.
Encourage other children in the group to guess the verb that is being acted out by the child holding the card.
Invite the first child who correctly guesses the verb to take the next turn. The new actor selects a card from the pile and acts out the verb printed on the card. Continue playing the game in this manner until all the cards in the pile have been used.
Divide the group into teams of three or four children. Provide each team with a sheet of paper and a pencil.
Call out a common verb, such as "run," "walk" or "jump." Instruct teams to work cooperatively to create a list of alternate verbs that also describe the given verb. For example, if the given verb is "walk," children may add verbs such as "strut," "stroll" and "stride" to their lists. Assign an allotted period of time, such as two or three minutes, to complete the task.
After the time has expired, invite each team to share the list of words it has created. The team that generates the largest alternate verb list wins that round of the game. Assign new common verbs with each round. The team that wins the most rounds wins the game.
