Simplest Way to Teach Kids About Nouns & Verbs

Parts of speech can be a challenging concept for children to understand. As there are eight parts of speech, teaching one or two at a time can help students retain the information better. Nouns and verbs are often taught together, because verbs explain what the noun is doing. Nouns can be a person, place, thing or idea and verbs are action words, such as jump and run. Teaching nouns and verbs does not have to be complicated. Simple books, songs and activities focused around verbs and nouns will provide students with a solid foundation for understanding parts of speech.

Instructions

Create a parts of speech chart. A parts of speech chart is a tool that teachers often use to first introduce nouns, verbs and the other parts of speech to their students. Explain to the children what each part of speech does in a sentence briefly, but focus on nouns and verbs for now. You can also easily find ready-made parts of speech charts at teacher supply stores.

Teach through reading. One of the simplest ways to help students understand verbs and nouns is to read to them. Point out the nouns and verbs on each page, or have the students take turns picking them out. Give the students reading booklets they can write it and have them circle the different types of nouns and verbs in different colors, such a red circle for proper nouns and a green circle for past verbs.

Teach through songs. Kids tend to memorize songs well, and a parts of speech song can help them remember what nouns and verbs do. While you can find various pre-recorded parts of speech songs that you can play for your students, you can also make up the songs yourself, or challenge older kids to create a song or rap about nouns and verbs and how to use them.

Play noun and verb games or activities. Games help reinforce the understanding of what verbs and nouns are. One noun game you could play with your students is have the students write down as many nouns as they can find in the classroom, or you can have them list things that are a specific type of noun. The student with the most nouns wins. For a verb activity you can have the children play a mad lib game where you let each student say a verb and list them on the board. The students must then create a story using all over the verbs listed.
