Write a one-, two- and three-syllable word on a blackboard to show the difference between single- and multi-syllable words. Use words that kids will find fun such as cat, tiger and elephant, respectively.
Break the words out by syllable so the kids have a clear visual to go along with the sound. For example, write elephant "el–e–phant" and tiger "ti – ger."
Say the words slowly, emphasizing each syllable. Have the kids repeat the words after you. Saying the words and syllables while viewing them on the blackboard can help solidify the concept in kids' brains.
Have the kids clap for each syllable. Using our prior elephant example, they would clap three times, the first on "el," then on "e" and then on "phant."
Have the kids jump for each syllable. The word "tiger" would let them jump twice, for example.
