How to Teach Kids About Sheep

Whether you're a teacher who is incorporating a farm-animal unit into your curriculum, or you're a parent who wants to teach your children about sheep, there are several engaging activities that you can use to teach kids about ovine. These animals are an important part of our ecosystem, as they produce wool --- a material that is used to create blankets, sweaters and other items that keep us warm. Use a variety of activities that spark children's attention to promote a greater understanding about these animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach kids about sheep through arts and crafts activities. Children can transform paper plates into sheep using cotton balls and construction paper. Use white paint to create images of sheep. Glue yarn onto printouts of sheep. Use cotton swabs to dab white paint onto construction paper and then cut the paper to resemble sheep. While making these crafts, discuss the characteristics and importance of sheep --- their wool, their habitat and the reason why sheep are so valuable.

    • 2

Plan a field trip to a sheep farm. Talk with the owners of the farm to arrange a tour. Ask the farmers to talk to the children about the sheep; how they live, what it's like to care for them. Determine if it is possible for the children to watch a lamb being sheered.

    • 3

Encourage children to act as sheep, shepherds or farmers to apply what they know about sheep in a meaningful way. Provide them with props to help them get into character to make the sheep play more realistic. Cut out an image of a barn from cardboard. Provide some of the children with plush, white blankets to wrap around themselves and offer other children tools that farmers or shepherds would use to herd the sheep.

    • 4

Read children's literature about sheep. Choose titles such as "Hooray for Sheep Farming!" by Bobbie Kalman, "The Shepherd's Trail" by Cat Urbigkit and "In the Sheep Pasture" by Patricia Stockland. Read the books aloud and ask children questions that pertain to the titles before, during and after reading to increase the comprehension about the content of the books. Compare and contrast the books using a Venn diagram or create a list of information that was learned about sheep after reading the books.
