Fun Activities and Crafts for Kids

Holidays, snow days, weekends and summer vacation may leave children wondering what to do with their free time. Unhooking kids from the TV, video and computer games and into something less high tech may seem like a difficult process, but anything is possible when it's fun. With a little planning and a few simple and inexpensive materials, you can entice your children to participate.
  1. Spreading Picture

    • Draw a picture using water-soluble markers on a paper coffee filter. Stretch the coffee filter across the top of a wide mouth jar or glass and secure with a rubber band. Dip your finger into a cup of water and place a bit of water in the center and in several places throughout the filter. Watch the water stretch and distort the picture as the inks spread on the paper.

    Tie-Dyed T-Shirts

    • Cover your work area with a plastic drop cloth or shower curtain. Place a pre-washed, ironed T-shirt on a protected surface. Gather up about two inches of fabric, front and back, and twist it together and secure with a rubber band. Gather up another two-inch section on each shoulder, twist and secure with a rubber band. Twist the shirt together from just below the center rubber band and secure with rubber bands about three inches apart, leaving the arms free, if possible.

Choose three or four colors of dye to color your shirt. Mix a small portion of each powdered dye with water in a separate squirt bottle. Squirt the dyes on the shirt, making sure to coat the creases and twists where the rubber bands hold the shirt together.

Place the shirt in a plastic bag and seal for several hours to allow the color to set. Rinse the garment, one colored area at a time to prevent all the colors running together. Remove the rubber bands and lay flat to dry.

    Crafty Trinket Tin

    • Cover the top of a mint tin with a large white shipping label and trim. Decorate the top with acrylic gemstones, seashells, seed beads or seed pearls and glue. Cover the bottom of the tin interior with a section of felt and glue into place. Add your favorite small trinkets or jewelry.

    Summer Homemade Ice Cream Toss

    • In a quart-size freezer bag, pour one cup milk, one-half teaspoon vanilla, one-quarter cup chocolate syrup and one tablespoon sugar. Seal the bag and place it inside a gallon-size freezer bag containing ice cubes and a half cup of rock salt.

Seal the gallon bag securely and take turns tossing it from one child to another. Toss for about five to ten minutes.

Remove the small bag and rinse it thoroughly before opening it and removing the ice cream. Each bag serves two children.
