Fun and Cool Math Games for Kids

Some kids may be math whizzes, but others require a little coaxing when it comes to learning how to work with numbers. Math-based educational computer games can be an effective practice tool. By combining practical math concepts with engaging storylines and eye-catching graphics, kids can quickly develop stronger math skills. While some educational games offer math puzzles alongside other subjects (such as language arts or science), there are some that focus solely on the world of mathematics.
  1. Funbrain's Math Arcade

    • If you're looking for a free online game, the Funbrain website offers the Math Arcade. The Math Arcade features a board-game style path, which the player progresses along by beating various different math games. The player can choose her skill level and increase the difficulty as she goes along. Best of all, Funbrain does not store personal information, so your child's playtime will be kept safe and private.

    Math Missons

    • Scholastic's Math Missions is an adventure-themed problem solving game. There are two versions available: one for kindergarten to second grade, and one for third to fifth grade. Some of the topics covered are basic arithmetic, money, time, easy geometry and logic. The game scales its difficulty to the progress of the player. In other words, the better the player does, the more challenging the problems become. If the player starts to have trouble, the problems become less difficult.

    Math Blaster

    • The Math Blaster games have been around for twenty five years. Their current incarnation is an online game with a futuristic theme. Players join the ranks of the Intergalactic Space Patrol, which defends the galaxy through solving puzzles and playing arcade-style games. Though the game is played online, Math Blaster does require you to download the Unity 3D software engine. As this is a multiplayer game, Math Blaster has implemented precautions such as limited chat abilities, pre-programmed names and a variety of parental controls.

    Arthur's Math Games

    • Kids who are fans of the PBS series Arthur will likely enjoy learning basic math with their favorite characters from the show. In addition to arithmetic and simple fractions, Arthur's Math Games also teaches kids how to problem solve and helps them to develop their memory and matching skills.
