Fun Physical Activities for Homeschooled Kids

Homeschooling goes beyond the academic courses. Physical activities are an important part of a child's overall well-being and education. Homeschooling offers more flexibility for adding physical activity during the day because you control the schedule. Taking breaks from the academics for physical activities helps the kids concentrate.
  1. Exercise Circuits

    • Exercise circuits work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the weather. Create five or six different exercise activities that are age appropriate. Go with traditional exercises such as jumping jacks, push-ups and sit-ups, or create more interesting exercises. Ideas include juggling, jumping on a mini trampoline, tossing balls into a laundry basket or running around a cone. Set up the activities in a circular shape with each exercise having its own station. Each participant starts at a different station along the circuit. The kids do the exercise for a set amount of time. Either 30 seconds or a minute is a good amount of time. Everyone then rotates one spot to the next exercise station. Continue moving through the stations.

    Nature Hikes

    • A nature hike through the neighborhood or local park combines science and physical activity for homeschooled children. Take a camera along to capture the natural items you find along the way. A pair of binoculars helps kids see things closer. For a more exciting aspect to the activity, turn it into a scavenger hunt. Create a list of items that the kids can find in the neighborhood. Walk through the area together, crossing off each item as you find it.

    Dancing

    • Dancing is an entertaining physical activity you can do at any time with the kids. It works both inside and outside. Dancing makes a good break from the academic work of homeschooling because it doesn't take any special equipment. Turn on some music and let them come up with their own dance moves. The dancing energizes the students so they're more awake when you go back to the school work. Another option is to teach the kids dance steps to actual dances. Square dancing is an entertaining dance form that the kids can easily learn.

    Invented Games

    • This physical education activity lets the homeschooled kids come up with their own games. Gather several different pieces of equipment such as cones, frisbees, balls, hula hoops, jump ropes and bats. The kids pick the equipment they want to use in their games. They come up with the rules and method of game play. The kids then teach each other their games and take turns playing them.
