How to Paint a Vinyl Top School Table

Vinyl-covered furniture is popularly used on outdoor patios and in classrooms, as the vinyl surface is waterproof. Vinyl school tables, especially those used in elementary classrooms, tend to endure a lot of wear and stains as a result of use in diverse arts and crafts projects. To restore a vinyl school table for use inside or outside the classroom, paint it with materials and techniques suited for this kind of surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove stains, such as permanent stains from ink or paint, before painting, using a vinyl upholstery cleaner. Spray the cleaner directly onto the stain and let sit for three minutes. Use a sponge to work the product into vinyl and remove the stain.

    • 2

Thoroughly clean the vinyl surface. Use mild detergent and water and a soft-bristled brush to remove soil, dirt and grime, which would otherwise be trapped underneath paint layers. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, which can cause the vinyl to become brittle, or abrasive materials, such as steel wool, which may leave scratch marks on the vinyl. Rinse and fully dry the surface with a towel before painting.

    • 3

Apply to the table surface a vinyl-upholstery spray paint primer (unless the chosen paint is self-priming) to prevent flaking and peeling and to help the vinyl surface form a molecular bond with the paint and change color permanently.

    • 4

Apply two to three coats of spray paint to the table surface, allowing the coats to fully dry in between. Use a color of paint similar in shade to the original, as vinyl tends to absorb paint immediately and over time. Also, use only a paint specifically for use on vinyl, as other paints will not bond to the vinyl surface.

    • 5

Spray primer and paint, holding the can 12 to 14 inches away from the table surface, depending on the exact instructions on product. Spray in circular motions to prevent streaks, drips, runs and clumps. Allow the table 24 hours to dry fully before using.
