How to Get Exponents When Typing

If you take an algebra course in high school or college, you almost certainly will encounter the use of exponents. Exponents are numbers placed on the upper-right corner of other numbers or variables. The purpose of exponents is to indicate how many times a value should be multiplied by itself. Because exponents are written in an alternate size and position, you may wonder if it is possible to type them. Two methods are commonly used to type exponents.

Instructions

  1. Superscript Exponents

    • 1

Type a number or a variable (a letter that represents a value).

    • 2

Type the exponent that you will be using. For instance, if you are raising the variable "x" to the fifth degree, you would type x5.

    • 3

Click and make a tiny dragging motion with your mouse to highlight the exponent only.

    • 4

Click on the "Font" toolbar or option at the top of your screen. (You can find this toolbar or option in word-processing programs.)

    • 5

Click on "Superscript" or an equivalent symbol from the list of font options.

    Caret Exponents

    • 6

      Type a number or variable.

    • 7

Type "Shift" and then "6" as you continue to hold down the shift key. This will create the caret symbol: ^.

    • 8

Type your exponent. For example, if you were raising "y" to the eighth power, you would type "y^8."
