Place your hands in the proper typing position. Put your thumbs on the space bar and your eight other fingers on the row with the letters A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K and L. This is the position your hands should return to throughout the typing process.
Move your fingers away from this position to begin typing words. Economize your movements as much as possible using the fingers closest to the letter you need to type. Practice typing a page out of a book using word processing software.
Speak the letters out loud as you type the keys slowly. This will help you memorize the location of the keys. Remember to place your fingers back on the main row while typing. Practice until you become faster and the process feels easier.
Type a few pages out of a book without looking at the keyboard to work on memorization of the key placement. Do not worry if you make a lot of mistakes at first. Continue practicing each day until you can type without looking at the keyboard and your speed has improved.
Use typing exercises from websites such as Typing Pal and Typing Test to improve and test your speed.
