Download free learn-to-type software. There are many good programs that will teach you correct hand placement and provide beginner, intermediate and advanced exercises to improve your typing skills.
Use a web-based program to learn to type for free. If you are at a location where downloading isn't allowed, or practical, there are many free web-based lessons you can complete to improve your typing skills. These are similar to the free software downloads, but require an active Internet connection to use.
Check out a book of typing lessons from your local library. Most libraries will have several different typing lesson books to choose from. Find one that appeals to you and bring it home.
Take a free keyboarding class. Many local colleges and adult education programs will have classes you can attend for free. Call your local adult education extension to inquire about upcoming courses.
Practice, practice, practice. Once you've chosen one of the methods to teach you the basics of typing, only practice will improve your skills. You can learn how to type for free, but you must be willing to work at it, especially if you are an absolute beginner.
