How to Learn Numeric Typing

Data entry positions often require that you be a fast typist, not just with words but with numbers as well. For entries that are mostly numeric using the numbers only key pad is the most efficient way to enter the data. There are several ways to learn numeric typing right at home. With practice and for little to not cost you can greatly increase your spend and work efficiency.

      Become familiar with the numbers only key pad. On a keyboard it is located on the right hand side so you will have to use your right hand. You will primarily be using three fingers; pointer, middle, and ring. Also, learn where the numbers and other keys (enter, plus) are located.

      Place your forefinger on the 4 key, middle on the 5, and ring finger on the 6. Type those keys in order and then backwards. Do the same for each line (7,8,9, and 1,2,3) to get a feel for the number key locations.

      Practice using the addition and enter keys. Here you may feel most comfortable using your pinky finger for the outside keys located on the right such as the minus, plus and enter key.

      Use or create a numeric typing tutorial. There are several options to practice your numeric typing. You can create one by typing a serious of random numbers and symbols into a Word document. Then practice retyping by copying what you created. You can also purchase software typing programs such TypeRightNow or Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing or find a free one on the Internet. See the references and resources below for some options.

      Test your speed. Use a numeric typing test to test your speed and how well you are improving. Your tutorial will have a test mode or you can find free programs online.
