Challenges With Implementing Technology in Schools

Technology has become an important part of the learning process. Classrooms are rapidly becoming learning environments where information is at hand everywhere, from computers to iPods and social networks. Teachers are no longer the sole providers of information; they are mentors and organizers of information. Modern teachers facilitate learning by showing students the efficient way to use information. They understand that using technology in the classroom increases motivation, improves academic performance and stimulates collaboration and communication among students.
  1. Administration

    • School and district administrators play an important role in schools' acceptance and embracing technology. Administrators can constitute a challenge to technology implementation in their schools if they fail to understand it as a means of making schools a modern learning place that motivate children to improve their academic performance. Administrators need to establish connections between technology and curriculum, and to develop goals for student learning and teacher training. Using successive evaluations, they can continuously adjust these goals to make learning efficient.

    Budget

    • Raising funds for technology implementation projects can be a challenge in many schools. It is not only a matter of finances to initiate implementation. Schools also have to allocate money for equipment maintenance and yearly purchases of updated technology. Initial funding is generally granted for partial technological acquisitions. As technology improves fast, older devices must be updated constantly to remain efficient and work properly.

    Teachers

    • Even today, in the 21st century, there are teachers that resist using technology in their classroom. Some teachers may lack training in handling technological devices, while others may think traditional education can still be effective without these new teaching and learning tools. Teacher training can be a difficult obstacle to surpass, because it is time consuming for teachers.

    Classroom Challenges

    • Space and availability can be challenging for technology implementation in schools. If computers are limited to computer labs, moving students to the labs can prove time consuming and difficult. If computers are installed in classrooms, they can take up valuable space ordinarily used for desks and storage of learning materials.
