How to Draw on Whiteboards

Whiteboards, or dry erase boards, are hard, smooth white surfaces that can be used to make lists, convey information and leave notes. The boards are used in boardrooms, classrooms, kitchens and offices. It is easy to draw on whiteboards. Decide what type of board you'll use and what kind of information you'll be using it for. Whiteboards are easier to use than chalk boards because the markers don't smudge or get all over your fingers.

Choose the correct whiteboard surface for your needs. The three main surfaces are melamine, EverWhite and porcelain. Melamine is the most inexpensive dry erase board surface. These boards are great for kitchen use and for children to play with. They will need to be replaced after a year or two. EverWhite boards have an easy-to-erase surface that cleans well. Dry erase markers don't stain it or leave a "ghosting" or faint remainder of the marker. Porcelain boards are expensive and porous. Markers don't always wipe clean from these dry erase boards. Ghosting develops over time, which makes the surface hard to read.

Buy the correct markers for your whiteboard. Purchase markers that say "dry erase" on them, which means the marker will wipe clean off a smooth surface and not require water or cleaning solution. Test the markers you choose to be sure that they will wipe off the whiteboard. A popular brand of dry erase marker is Expo.

Draw large images on the whiteboard so that information can more easily be read in the back of the classroom or boardroom. Change what you've written by wiping it away with your hand or eraser. Practice with the whiteboard to make your presentation engaging.

Convey information to visual learners at school, home or work using whiteboards. Place a small whiteboard next to your computer and mark down the time you spend working on different projects for timekeeping purposes. Keep track of goals or daily tasks and mark them off as you complete them. To make a grocery list, use permanent marker to list most-used items and check them off with a dry erase marker when they're running low.

Erase whiteboards with specially made erasers, a soft cloth or paper towels. If a board develops faint color marks over time, use a cleaning spray to wipe it clean. To erase permanent marker, try scribbling over it with a dry erase marker and wiping it off. The solution in dry erase markers can dissolve some permanent inks.
