How to Draw a Little Dinosaur

For 160 million years, dinosaurs -- land-dwelling reptiles -- roamed the world. According to the BBC, dinosaur means "terrible or wondrous lizards." They ranged from the small carnivorous tyrannosaurs to the lumbering vegetarian sauropods. Over a thousand species of dinosaur bones have been found on all the continents. The jury is still out on why they disappeared. Drawing a dinosaur is also a history lesson. A sitting position for your little dinosaur is ideal, as that way all the body parts are clearly visible.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick your little dinosaur type. If you want a tiny dinosaur, go for the troodon formosus. If you opt for a baby dinosaur, even a brachiosaurus -- one of the biggest of the species -- will do.

    • 2

Draw two large circles, one on top of the other. These shapes represent the little dinosaur's head and body.

    • 3

Add a quarter moon on the right-hand side of the top circle. On the bottom circle, sketch in a half moon for the little dinosaur's foot. Add a three-quarter size moon on the bottom left-hand side of the dinosaur for her tail.

    • 4

Start on the left-hand side of the dinosaur's head and draw in the outline of the eye -- make it big -- and the mouth. Depending on the type of little dinosaur you are drawing, you may want to add horns. Also mark in the nostril on the end of the dinosaur's snout.

    • 5

Work on the upper body. Sketch in the shoulders and then move on to the "arms," complete with "hands" that have claws on them.

    • 6

Define the tail and extend it with a point if you want to. Add feet -- keep it simple with two or three toes.

    • 7

Go back to the eye. Draw three circles in the eye socket and then color in the remaining area. Draw a dark line around the eye so it is clearly visible. The bridge of the nose requires definition, so mark that in. Draw a line down the center of the snout to indicate depth.

    • 8

Sketch in the final details of the nose and then add a dot in the middle. Give your little dinosaur a crooked grin for a bit of character.

    • 9

Color your little dinosaur. Dinosaurs are generally green, but that doesn't mean you can't opt for purple or yellow. Erase the sketch outline when you are finished and you are ready to frame your little dinosaur.
