How to Light a Bunsen Burner With Paper

Students and scientists use Bunsen burners in the laboratory to heat items for experiments. The burners are fueled by natural gas and usually are lit with a striker, an instrument that keeps the user's hand at a safe distance from the flame while it throws a spark to ignite the burner. Use a piece of paper to light a Bunsen burner from a safe distance when a striker is not available.

Things You'll Need

  • Sheet of notebook or printer paper

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the paper into a tight cylinder and leave the last inch of one end flared. The rolled-up paper should resemble a length of rope with a frayed end.

    • 2

Check the hoses and make sure they are secure where they attach to the fuel source and the burner.

    • 3

Open any gas and air valves on the burner according to the burner's instructions. Generally, a gas valve built into the burner is barely opened and an air valve is open about halfway.

    • 4

Light the flared end of the twisted-up paper with matches or a lighter.

    • 5

Turn on the gas until you hear a hiss.

    • 6

Hold the flaming tip of paper as close to the top of the burner as possible without placing the burning paper over the burner opening. The flame will light the burner.

    • 7

Extinguish the paper in the bowl of water.
