How to Practice Identifying Parts of Speech

Identifying parts of speech is a crucial skill that helps a person construct and understand sentences. There are eight parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, interjections, pronouns and conjunctions. Each part of speech explains what the word does, not what it means, so the same word can form different parts of speech in different sentences. Define the eight parts of speech first, then practice identifying them.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the definition of each of the eight parts of speech. Add an example for each. Keep this as a reference.

    • 2

Print out free practice worksheets found online or make copies from library practice books. Each part of speech should have its own worksheets.

    • 3

Take one page from a story or short children's book and copy the content on another sheet of paper. Number the sentences and leave two spaces between each sentence.

    • 4

Identify all parts of speech in each numbered sentence. Write the answer underneath the word or use a color-coded system.

    • 5

Ask a friend, family member or teacher to check your answers. Continue practicing until you can recognize any of the eight parts of speech in any sentence.
