Create a worksheet by first drawing a simple picture on graph paper. The picture could be of a boat, flower or other easily drawn object. As you draw the picture, connect various points on the graph. Think of a connect-the-dots picture if you need a reference to do this. Then list the set of points you used on a separate sheet of paper. List the coordinates in the order they appeared on your drawing.
Demonstrate to your students how to mark a point on a graph using a set of coordinates. For instance, if the coordinates are (2, 3), you would go over two markings to the right on the x axis and up three markings on the y axis to create the point.
Distribute a sheet of graph paper to each student. The paper should have an x axis and a y axis along with measurement markings on each axis.
Write the sets of coordinates which go with the picture you created earlier on the board. Write them in order. Instruct your students to graph the points and then connect the points. Advise them to use a ruler to keep the lines straight.
Instruct your students to create their own pictures using coordinates once they have practiced the previous exercise several times and are familiar with the process.
