Select a central character to focus the story on. First-person stories are narrated from either the writer's point of view or a character's. Find the character through which you want to convey the first-person account.
Replace pronouns and proper nouns that refer to the central character with the word "I." For example, in the sentence "Candice opened the door and looked around," replace "Candice" with "I." Change similar sentences in the paragraph to reflect this first-person perspective.
Create a voice for the first-person character. While narrating, establish a personality for your character. Insert descriptive words and phrases that can help paint yourself or the character as funny, intellectual, serious, sarcastic or mean. Maintain the same voice and language throughout the first paragraph to help readers grasp who the main character is.
Remove sentences and phrases from the paragraph that are beyond the first-person character's ability. Limit the sentences to things that the first-person character would do or know. For example, a first-person narrator cannot know what the other characters are thinking, so sentences that include that information should be deleted.
