How to Create an Abstract Page Using APA Format

Because readers often decide whether to read your entire article based on the abstract, it can be the most important paragraph in your paper, according to the sixth edition of the "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" (APA). Most scholarly journals require that submitted manuscripts have abstracts. Follow APA style guidelines to format a concise yet thorough abstract and you will be on your way to a good first impression.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the abstract on the second page of your manuscript. Right align the page number "2" in the header. Left align the running head you established on your title page.

    • 2

Center the word "Abstract" on the first line in the main section of the page. Use a normal font --- do not bold or underline.

    • 3

Type the body of the abstract beginning one double-spaced line below the word "Abstract." Write the entire abstract as one paragraph and do not indent the first line of the paragraph.

    • 4

List keywords after the abstract if they are required by the journal to which you plan to submit the manuscript. Begin the keyword list one double-spaced line below the abstract, and indent as for a paragraph. Type "Keywords:" in italics, then list your keywords in regular font, separated by commas.
