Insert a number, in superscript, in the text, following almost any punctuation mark. The inserted number should not follow a dash. If a sentence within parentheses must be footnoted, the footnote number should appear within the parentheses.
To insert a footnote using Microsoft Word, click on the "References" tab in the menu across the top, and click on "Insert Footnote." A superscript number will be inserted where the cursor is, and you will be prompted to fill in the footnote text in the footer of the page.
Place the corresponding footnote at the bottom of the page on which the text citation appears. Begin the footnote by indenting five spaces.
Keep explanatory or additional information related to the textual citation brief and focused. This supplemental information is one of two types of footnotes deemed acceptable by the APA.
Place a copyright citation in a footnote if you have quoted more than 500 words of published material or if you feel that you have gone beyond what is deemed acceptable under "fair use" in copyright law. In these situations where you have gone beyond "fair use," you must obtain the permission of the copyright holder to cite the copyright holder's work. Ideally, the permission should be in writing and should be attached to your document. The footnote should start with: "Note. From ...," followed by the full bibliographic entry for the work cited, followed by "Reprinted with permission." These copyright citations are the only other kind of footnote deemed acceptable by the APA. All other citations should follow the standard APA citation format. In the APA format, a completed copyright citation footnote might look something like this:
