How to End the First Paragraph in a Five Paragraph Essay Outline

The five paragraph essay is a classic format for composition writing. Though it is not the only format that can be used for writing an essay, it is a simple model of for you to consider using while you are working to develop your composition writing skills. The first paragraph in your essay is the introduction, this is where you include your thesis statement. A thesis statement tells readers what the essay is about and gives them an idea of what to expect from the rest of the essay. Concluding your introductory paragraph can be accomplished in one sentence containing two elements, the hook and the transition.

Instructions

  1. Conclude Your Introduction

    • 1

Hook your reader. You have finished introducing the topic that your essay is written on by the concluding sentence of your introduction. Give the reader a taste of something interesting in the paper that will help to keep them reading.

    • 2

Transition the reader. You want your paper to flow and have a cohesive feel, transitioning the reader to the following paragraph either by having the information in the hook be what is discussed in the next paragraph or having a connection between the hook and next paragraph.

    • 3

Edit your concluding sentence. After you have written your concluding sentence, go back and take out any unnecessary words. You want this sentence to be clear and concise, so you do not confuse readers. Confusing readers will deter them from continuing with their reading.
