Make a list of questions the reader may have regarding the topic that you want to write about.
Select three main points that you want to discuss and gather information to support the main points. Use the list of questions you created to help formulate the three main points of the essay.
Organize the list by making three columns. Put each main point in a column. Under each main point, list the information relevant to that point. For example, if you're writing about sewing, the three main points could be fabric, sewing patterns, and the sewing machine. In the column for fabric, you could list buying fabric, preparing fabric, different types of fabric, fabric grain, and fabric storage. Continue this process for the remaining columns -- sewing patterns and sewing machines.
Select two or three things from the list in the columns that you believe are most beneficial to the reader. Using the example above, you may decide that you want the reader to know about buying and preparing fabric.
Write the introductory paragraph of the essay. Write one or two sentences that convey your topic. Include a description of the main ideas from the three columns that you made when preparing to write your essay. From the example above, you would use the introductory paragraph on sewing to introduce the reader to the main ideas of sewing. These ideas would include fabric, sewing patterns, and the sewing machine.
Write the second paragraph of the essay. The second paragraph needs to include the first of the main ideas about the topic you are writing. These can be facts that you would like to describe, points that you would like to explain, or things that you want to define. Use the list from the columns to formulate the information used in this paragraph. From the essay on sewing example above, use this paragraph to describe how to buy and prepare fabric.
Repeat Step 6 for the third and fourth paragraph of the essay. The second, third, and fourth paragraphs are referred to the body of the five paragraph essay.
Write two or three sentences that will conclude your essay. Use the conclusion paragraph to summarize the main ideas, describe what's important about the topic, or discuss what the reader should take away from the essay. The concluding paragraph should be used to tell the reader why you wrote the essay. For example, in the essay about sewing, use the concluding paragraph to summarize the main points in the essay and tell the reader why they should learn to sew.
