How to Structure an English Literature Essay

In writing an English paper, the information and ideas you are presenting are of paramount importance. However, one aspect that may be overlooked is making sure the essay is structured correctly. Formatting an academic paper properly will organize the content in a rational, coherent manner to make it as reader friendly as possible. Professors in higher-level learning institutions will already expect their students to have a firm grasp on structuring an essay.

Instructions

Create an introduction. Introductions briefly explain your topic to your audience so they may better understand what your essay will entail. Many people choose to start with a question about the topic to get the reader thinking about and relating the subject to his or her own experience. As the last sentence of your introductory paragraph, write a thesis statement that either states what your opinion will be or give a more detailed description of what the essay will explicitly cover.

    • 2

Write three or more body paragraphs. Each paragraph will explore one specific aspect of the topic, but all paragraphs should relate back to answering or developing the thesis statement. These paragraphs are meant to provide information about the topic and offer facts supporting your research. Each paragraph should be four to six sentences. Use the last sentence of each paragraph to sum up the section and to make a transition to the next part of the essay.

    • 3

Compose a concluding paragraph. This paragraph consists of a general overview of what was already touched on in your paper but also creates an ending by answering the thesis statement or giving a final analysis of the topic.
