How to Write an Essay in First Person Narrative

A narrative essay can either tell a story, complete with plot, characters, setting, conflict and conclusion, or can take the form of a book report, according to Purdue Online Writing Lab. Although narrative essays can be written from various perspectives, the most common point of view is that of the author.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the essay from your own perspective. Writing in first person, according to Roane State Community College's Online Writing Lab, "invites your readers into an intimate discussion," helping them connect meaningfully to your ideas or assertions.

    • 2

Choose your verbs carefully. When writing in first person, avoid the tendency to use "be" verbs such as am, is or was, and incorporate strong actionable verbs into your prose.

    • 3

Use clear and concise language throughout the essay. The Purdue Online Writing lab recommends using language in narrative essays that will "evoke specific emotions and senses in the reader."

    • 4

Incorporate smooth transitions from paragraph to paragraph. Narrate the essay in logical order. A narrative essay should flow in the same way that a casual conversation would.

    • 5

Make a point in your essay. Whether you are writing a story or a book report, introduce a concept, idea or event in your essay, and conclude by making a point. This may take the form of a revelation, a convincing argument or a simple description of the significance of an idea or event.
