How to Write & Revise an Essay

Writing an essay is an essential skill for students. Writing an essay can be made easy by selecting your topic and outlining your main ideas first. Writing the correct type of paper and following a format that consists of introductory, body and conclusion paragraphs is important. Referencing outside sources to gain credibility is a must. Revising an essay is critical to its overall quality. Revisiting your essay to look for and correct formatting, grammar, spelling and structural errors allows you to turn in a more polished work.

      Select a topic and prepare a diagram to brainstorm the main ideas of the essay.

      Follow the guidelines and format presented to you by the organization you are writing for. Include the topic, date, purpose and describe the position taken in the essay when writing a position paper. Explain and back up your topic with the latest research when writing an informative paper. Analyze the support and evidence of your topic when writing a cause and effect paper.

      Research your topic. Find credible sources to back up your ideas, points and analysis. Give credit for your sources by referencing your work.

      Start the introductory paragraph by writing your main idea and approach of the essay. End the Introductory paragraph with a statement that outlines the goals of the essay.

      Write a body paragraph for each goal or point of the essay. Give examples and evidence that support each goal and point of the essay in the body paragraphs.

      Write a conclusion paragraph to end the essay. Reiterate the main idea of the essay with your own words to reflect your feedback on the essay.

      Revise your essay. Proofread the paper and look for any structural, grammar, spelling or formatting errors by going over the essay sentence by sentence.
