Lesson Plans on the Mail Carrier for Pre-K

Though mail carriers are part of everyone's day to day lives, mail delivery can be a complex idea to some preschoolers. Use the classroom to introduce the career and service through art and imaginative activities. These activities are completed with a number of items already found in your classroom.
  1. Postcards

    • Bring in postcards from your own travels to show the children. Explain that the front shows pictures of where you have been and on the back you write a note to family and friends. Hand out postcard-sized construction paper. Ask the children to decorate the front with a picture, and then help the children write a message to mom and dad on the back. Mail them to their homes or tell them to give them to their parents.

    Pictures of Home

    • To teach children about how post office employees drop the mail off at home. Ask children to draw a picture of their houses. They can include their families, outdoor toys and anything else that reminds them of home. When completed, ask children their addresses and write these on the paper. Explain that postmen and postwomen use addresses to make sure mail gets to the correct house.

    Post Office

    • Set up a pretend post office in the classroom. Children can play at the post office during play time or as an in-class activity. Set up a cash register, scale and mailing station for children to use. Ask children to write letters to take to the post office. They will have to purchase pretend stamps (stickers work well for this) and send the mail from the post office. Ask children to write letters to their friends in class. A designated "postman" can give the letters to children in class. Create pretend packages for children to weigh as well.

    Mailbox

    • Set a mailbox up on your desk. Ask children to draw you a picture or write you a letter during craft time. Place a "stamp (or sticker)" on the letter. The children should then put the letter in the mailbox on your desk. Once everyone delivered your letters and drawings, share them with the class.
