Pre-K Lesson for Parts of a Flower

Teaching concepts, ideas and facts to young children generally is best done through hands-on experiences to keep kids interested. The learning process for understanding the parts of a flower uses basic terms and visual aids to help kids grasp the words and concepts being taught. A lesson plan for teaching pre-K children about flowers should instruct and intrigue children at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant seeds to begin the lesson about flowers. Have small children assist with pressing flower seeds into dirt. Fill the compartments of an empty egg carton with dirt and press one to two seeds in each opening. Water the seeds and place the egg carton on a shelf that receives indirect sunlight. Tell children that flowers grow from seeds and over time the seeds they planted will grow into flowers.

    • 2

Gather the children in a semi-circle and hold up pictures of flowers. Point to the stems, leaves and petals on the pictures and have the children say the names of each part. Pass around a small potted flower, in full bloom, to let each child visually inspect the parts of the flower after you’ve told them what each part is. Gently lift the potted plant out of the container to show the children what the roots look like.

    • 3

Distribute white paper and crayons to the children, making sure each child receives four sheets of paper. Instruct the kids to draw one part of a flower on each of the pieces of paper. Have the children draw and color the roots, stems, leaves and petals. Have the children write their own initials on the back of the papers, if they can, and gather all drawings. Write the children’s initials yourself if your students haven’t mastered the alphabet yet.

    • 4

Cut out each section of the flower, as drawn by the kids. Instruct the children to assemble the flower by taping together the four parts of the flower. Allow children to refer to the books and pictures for reference. Hang the taped-together flowers around the room once completed.
