Titanic Lesson Plans for Elementary Children

The Titanic sank in April 1912 and has fascinated the world ever since. From intriguing underwater shots of the magnificent ship's wreckage to the epic 1997 film, the curiosity surrounding the sinking of the Titanic has not diminished. Help your students learn more about the Titanic with engaging lesson plans that bring the ship back to life.
  1. Titanic Scrapbook

    • Ask students to create a scrapbook of the Titanic from the point of view of a survivor. Ask students to print out and collect pictures of the ship and the people on it. The scrapbook might include newspaper clippings and journal entries (written by the students) of an imagined account of what happened on the ship as it sank. To create the scrapbook, give each student a sheet of white card stock and invite him to glue the pictures, newspaper articles and journal entries onto the sheet. Provide art supplies so that students can decorate as they wish. Collect all of the pages together and bind them into a class book.

    Titanic Passengers

    • Encourage students to learn about the Titanic by researching the passengers on board. Show students how to look up names of well-known passengers on the Titanic using passenger manifests and newspapers. Instruct students to learn as much as they can about the passengers, including occupations, ages and families. Show students how to create a poster presentation about the people they chose and present the posters to the class. (ref.3)

    Newspapers

    • Help students learn about the Titanic with student-created newspapers, recommends the Scholastic website. Bring in newspapers so that students can get an idea of how a newspaper is put together. Ask students to work in teams to create a newspaper that includes pictures, interviews, maps, headlines, a detailed account of the events that occurred, a list of passengers on board the Titanic and other pertinent information. Give each group a chance to share its newspaper with the class.

    Packing for the Titanic

    • Ask students to research items that passengers packed for their voyage on the Titanic, and show pictures of items discovered in the wreckage. Take note of personal items such as jewelry, hair brushes, shoes and other items. Encourage students to research any items they do not recognize or that are no longer widely used. Discuss how current technology might have prevented the sinking of the Titanic or ensured the passengers' rescue.
