How to Prepare Catalase Solution From Powder

Catalase is an enzyme found in nearly all living organisms that are exposed to oxygen. It has many applications in the industrial world, including the removal of harmful chemicals from milk prior to the production of dairy products, the prevention of oxidation in wrapped food, the cleaning of contact lenses and in tests to determine species of bacteria. If you have a supply of catalase in its powdered form and you need to prepare a liquid solution of it, you can do so by combining it with a potassium hydroxide reagent.

Things You'll Need

  • Protective gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Potassium phosphate
  • Mass scale
  • Purified water
  • 2 graduated cylinders

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out 1.14 grams of potassium phosphate and pour it into your graduated cylinder.

    • 2

Measure out 100 milliliters of purified water and pour it into your graduated cylinder. Stir until the solution is thoroughly mixed.

    • 3

Measure out 5.61 grams of potassium hydroxide and pour it into your graduated cylinder to balance the pH level of your solution.

    • 4

Measure out 1 gram of your catalase powder and pour it into your graduated cylinder. Stir until the catalase is thoroughly dissolved to complete your liquid catalase solution.
