Decide on a thesis. A thesis is your response to the essay topic, which asks if you "agree or disagree with the following statement." The official TOEFL website provides the following sample statement: "A teacher's ability to relate well with students is more important than excellent knowledge of the subject being taught."
Outline your supporting ideas. Always prepare a draft of your ideas before you actually write the essay out in full paragraphs. A TOEFL essay should include two to three major points that support the thesis and at least two minor points or examples to explain the major points. Evidence can include examples, logic and personal experiences.
Write the introduction and body paragraphs of your essay in full. Your TOEFL essay should be four to five paragraphs long, consisting of an introductory paragraph, two or three body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. Your introduction should include your thesis, while the body paragraphs of your essay will contain supporting evidence.
Conclude your essay by restating the thesis in a different way and leaving the reader with one final, interesting thought.
Proofread your essay for technical errors such as grammar, spelling or punctuation mistakes. The TOEFL graders will be looking for proficiency in this area.
Edit your paragraphs for unity, coherence and development. TOEFL graders will be checking to see if your sentences flow together, your paragraphs stay on topic and you have sufficiently explained each point.
