Go to the official site of the Educational Testing Service for location and dates of the iBT. You can purchase a package of test preparation materials, which include sample essays (see Resources below).
Study the eight types of questions you could encounter: agree/disagree, choice/preference, compare/contrast, good/ad, if/what, what/how, why, describe. Learn how to respond to each type of question (see Resources).
Examine sample essays. Notice how the writer organizes his essay in sample responses to the question asked (see Resources).
Develop a quick way to gather ideas, such as brainstorming with lists, mapping with trees or using a simple outlining technique. Organize your thoughts into a main idea with supporting arguments.
Practice writing sample essays using a timer set to 30 minutes. Spend the first 10 minutes organizing your thoughts. Write your essay; then proofread and revise.
Work with a tutor familiar with the TOEFL essay. She can help you with organization techniques, grammar, vocabulary and basic writing skills.
