Fall sports commonly offered in secondary school include football, cross country, volleyball, field hockey, golf and soccer. Football is a popular fall sport, and many high schools have some kind of homecoming event to celebrate a home game, which alumni may return to school watch.
During the winter, many high schools offer sports that cannot be played outside. Swimming, diving, dance, bowling, ice hockey, indoor soccer, wrestling, cheerleading and basketball are popular winter sports. Track is one outdoor sport that is typically offered in the winter as well.
Secondary schools usually offer tennis (singles and doubles), softball, baseball, lacrosse and track and field in the spring. Track and field encompasses a variety of events. The typical running events include sprints, long distance runs, relays and hurdles, but there are also jumping events, such as long jump, triple jump, pole vault and high jump, and throwing events, such as shot put, javelin, discus and hammer.
Archery, martial arts, rowing, skiing, surfing and water polo are some sports that are offered at relatively few high schools. This is mainly due to the difficulty in acquiring practice space or materials, but interest in these fields is growing.
