Cut out three-inch long hearts from red or pink construction paper. Fold the paper in half. Use the hearts to play a matching game. Write one piece of information on one side of the heart. Write matching information on the other side of the heart. For example, write two words that rhyme or a state and its capital. Cut the heart in half. Mix them together and lay them face down. Play a game with two to four players. The child with the most matches wins the game.
Give each child two pieces of construction paper and several pieces of writing paper. The children will trace the shape of Washington's or Lincoln's head on each sheet of paper and cut it out. The heads should face the same direction. Place the writing paper between the two sheets of construction paper. Staple them at the top. Write facts or share a story about the president on each sheet of writing paper.
Take the students on a walk around the school grounds or around the neighborhood where their school is situated. Each child needs to have one shopping bag and a pair of gloves. As the students walk, ask them to pick up any trash they see. When you return to the school, have the students separate their trash. Collect recyclables and turn them in if their is a place in your town. Discuss how they can be responsible for keeping the earth clean.
Cut a six by six square. Decorate the square to look like a flag or use the colors and symbols from the flag. Fold the square to form a triangle. Straighten out the paper and fold it to form a triangle from the other two corners. Cut along the four folded line, cutting one and one-half inches down the line. Fold every other corner to the center and attach it with a stick pin. Push the stick pin into a pencil eraser and let the wind rotate your pinwheel.
