Remembrance Day Primary School Activities

Remembrance Day, or Veterans Day, is celebrated yearly on the Sunday closest to November 11. It is a day to remember those that have fought and passed away fighting in World Wars I and II. It is also known as Poppy Day and Armistice Day. Teach primary school children about the act of remembering and the concept of respect by doing Remembrance Day art activities to share with their friends and family.
  1. Poppy Wreath

    • Use a paper plate as a base for creating a paper poppy wreath in commemoration of Remembrance Day with primary students. Cut out the inside circle of the paper plates, leaving a large ring for preschoolers to use. Pre-cut small red circles out of construction paper or allow children to cut their own to use as poppies. Glue the red circles around the paper plate circle. Encourage children to cover all the white of the paper plate with red poppies. Use green markers to make dots in the center of the red construction paper poppies. Send the poppy Remembrance wreath's home for children to enjoy at home.

    Star Garland

    • Draw stars of various sizes on white, blue and red construction paper. Allow children to attempt cutting stars on their own and offer help as needed. Decorate the cut stars with markers and adorn with glitter. Punch one hole at the point of each star. Give each child a length of red, white or blue string and thread the stars onto string. Use the star garland to decorate the home or classroom.

    Penny Pendant

    • Make a special pendant with primary students using a construction paper star, string and a penny. Cut red, white or blue stars out of construction paper and have children decorate with glitter and markers. Glue a penny in the center of the star. Punch a hole at the top of the star and have children string a length of colorful ribbon or string through the hole. Help tie the penny pendants on children.
