St. Patrick's Day Art Activities for Toddlers

Every year, people in Ireland and abroad celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Though traditionally a religious holiday, people often think of shamrocks, rainbows and leprechauns---all symbols of Ireland---on this day. When thinking about St. Patrick's Day art activities for toddlers, consider their abilities. For examples, many toddlers are just learning how to use scissors and may not be able to cut intricate pieces.
  1. Hand Print Rainbow

    • A hand print rainbow is a project that can kids of varying ages can create. Older students can trace their hands onto colored construction paper, cut out the shapes and assemble them into a rainbow. Kids too young to use scissors paint their hand make hand prints to form a rainbow.

    Leprechaun Hat

    • Have children cut circles out of green construction paper. The circle should be the same size as the child's head. Add a three-inch border to form the brim of the hat. Then have the children roll another piece of construction paper into a tube and tape to to the circle. With black and yellow paper, they can create a band around the hat.

    Coloring Pages

    • Coloring pages provide an easy craft for toddlers. You can find free St. Patrick's Day-themed pages to print out and use. Children can choose from rainbow, leprechaun, shamrock or St. Patrick pictures.

    Paper Pot of Gold

    • This is a good activity for cutting practice. Have children cut out a pot shape from black construction paper and circle-shaped coins from gold paper. They can then glue the coins into the pot.

    Puffy Shamrock

    • Have children cut out two large shamrocks from green construction paper. Punch holes around the edges. Kids can use green yarn to sew the two pieces together. Before they finish it off, have them stuff a few cotton balls inside to make the shamrock puffy.

    Snake Chain

    • The legend of St. Patrick says that he drove the snakes out of Ireland. Teach children about this story, then have them create paper chain snakes. Have the kids cut rectangles out of green construction paper, then form circles using tape, linking the pieces together to form a snake. They can draw a face on the front link in the chain.
