How to Write Book Reports for Elementary Grades

Students are usually required to write book reports in elementary school and will continue writing these reports throughout middle and high school. Book reports are used to help students evaluate a particular book or novel, as they test the student's analytical and comprehension abilities. Although many teachers will hand out a specific list of what is expected in a book report, these guidelines will help a student complete a basic elementary school book report.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a title page that lists your name, the date, the title and author of the book, and the number of pages.

    • 2

Write down each subheading you would like to include in your report. You should always talk with your teacher to find out what he expects from the report and what headings he wants you to address. Most book reports include the following headings: Summary, Characters, Setting, Themes and Conclusion.

    • 3

Complete the body of the report by writing down each subheading and expanding on each. You should start with a brief plot summary of the book, but remember not to focus too much on the summary, as the point of a report is analysis. For the character section, describe the characters in the book, noting the traits of the main character and the other important people. For the setting, describe where the story took place and analyze how the setting affected the book. Under the theme subheading, analyze any consistent themes in the book, making sure to draw specific references to the story.

    • 4

Conclude the report with your opinions on the story. Write about different feelings you had when reading the book. The conclusion section should also note whether you would recommend this story to anyone else and what type of person might enjoy it.
