How to Teach Second-Graders to Write Book Reports

Second-grade students learn quickly and can advance in their reading and writing skills. By this age, students are ready to read books appropriate for their level and compile simple book reports to document their reading experience. Keep the book requirements basic so that students can be successful in reading a story and writing a book report about the story. Encourage students to include a drawing of a favorite scene to complete their book reports.

Instructions

    • 1

Assign students to read a book and write a report. Each student should choose a challenging book to read, or you should assign appropriate books for the students. Give the students one week to read the books. Afterward, teach them how to write a book report about the books they just read.

    • 2

Show students the title page of a book to teach them where to find the title, author and illustrator of books. Instruct students to underline the title of a book. Remind students to write a title by capitalizing the first word of the title and all other important words, as well as the names of the author and illustrator.

    • 3

Talk about settings and plots of stories. Explain that the setting of a story is the time and place that the story occurs. Explain that the plot is the subject or adventure in the story. Encourage the students to think about the setting and plot of the books they read. Help students determine setting and plot of their books, if necessary.

    • 4

Instruct the students to write the titles of their books at the top of a sheet of writing paper. Instruct students to write the names of the author and illustrator beneath the book title. Students should write their names in the upper right corner of the page.

    • 5

Encourage the students to write a sentence that describes the setting of the book. Help students construct these sentences, if necessary, and instruct them to write these sentences immediately below the book title and author/illustrator names.

    • 6

Instruct students to write two sentences that describe the plot of the book and tell them to write these sentences next on the writing paper.

    • 7

Direct students to write one sentence that gives their opinion of the book, as well as the reason for their opinion.

    • 8

Guide the students to finish their book reports by drawing a picture about a favorite scene from the books.
