Private Primary Boarding Schools

Boarding schools have been seen as bastions of college preparation at the high school or secondary school level. However, it is possible to find junior boarding schools that have campus living opportunities at the primary (first grade through fourth grade) level. Many of these boarding schools have day school options for kindergarten through second grade. Boarding starts at many schools in the third grade, although others start at grade four or five.
  1. Same-Sex Junior Boarding Schools

    • We traditionally think of boarding school as being a same sex-student population. St. Catherine's Academy in Anaheim, California is an all-boys military school with students in kindergarten through eighth grade. St. Catherine's class of 2010 graduated 39 students. Hampshire Country School in Rindge, New Hampshire also offers an all-boys educational setting at their boarding school on a 1700-acre campus. The school is small, capable of boarding 25 students.

    Co-ed Schools

    • Many boarding schools are co-ed, meaning that they allow males and females to attend the school. Delphian School in Sheridan, Oregon, which has an 85-percent boarding population, is a co-ed facility. The 800-acre campus hosts more than 270 students. The Bement School in Deerfield, Massachusetts also offers a co-ed environment in their day school and boarding school options. The school's mission is based on founder Grace Bement's philosophy that each child should be treated with respect and nutured. For the 2010-2011 school year, the school had 245 students.

    Learning Differences

    • Some students struggling with learning issues such as dyslexia or Asperger's syndrome need a different type of learning environment. Hampshire Day School works with 25 students with Asperger's or attention deficit disorder who have a high scholastic aptitude. The school boasts a ratio of two faculty members to every three students. Oakland School in Keswick, Virginia offers services for children with organizational disabilities (ADHD) or learning disabilities such as dyslexia or non-verbal learning disabilities. Oakland has capacity for 60 students and has a ratio of one faculty member to every three students.

    Specialized Schools

    • Another traditional idea of a boarding school is the military school in which the military idea of discipline is a part of the school's philosophy. Saint Catherine's Academy is the only Catholic boarding school in the country that also has a military element. The eight-acre campus serves children from kindergarten to eighth grade and has an average class size of 15 students.
