How to Graph an Inequality on a Number Line Using a TI-83

A number line is a rudimentary mathematical tool that illustrates numbers' ordinal relationships. Number lines also graph single-variable linear inequalities as directional lines or rays. The TI-83 is a graphing calculator primarily found in advanced secondary and collegiate mathematics and science courses. The calculator's vast capabilities allow for the solution of lower-order algebraic and primary math problems, and the calculator can easily graph a number line representation for single-variable inequalities.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Y=" key, which is located at the top left of the keypad. A new screen will appear with a list of Ys with equal signs.

    • 2

Enter the inequality to the right of the first "Y=." For this example, the inequality is 2x - 1 > 3. To enter the x-variable, press the "X, T, Θ, n" key. To enter the ">" sign, press the "2nd" key, and then press the "Math" key. Press the down arrow key to scroll to the appropriate inequality sign, then press "Enter."

    • 3

Press the "Graph" key located to the top right of the keypad. The number line will be represented on the ensuing graph.
