How to Graph Inequalities on Two Sides

An inequality is a statement that a given variable is less than or greater than a number; the variable and the number are not equal. For example x > 6 is an inequality as is x < 3. An inequality on two sides is a statement including both a less than and a greater than statement, for example 3 < x < 8. In addition, forms such as 3 < = x < 8 are inequalities.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a number line. Make sure both numbers in your inequality are included in the number line, and continue it beyond those numbers. For example, in 3 < x < 8 you could have points on the line labeled from 0 to 10.

    • 2

Draw a circle at the larger of the two numbers in your inequality. In the example, draw a circle at 8.

    • 3

Determine if the "less than" sign adjacent to the larger number is a "less than or equal to" sign. If it is, fill in the circle.

    • 4

Draw a dot at the smaller of the two numbers in your inequality. In the example, draw a circle at 3.

    • 5

Determine if the "less than" sign adjacent to the smaller number is a "less than or equal to" sign. If it is, fill in the circle.

    • 6

Mark the number line between the two circles.
